Jesse Trout is the founder of equila and co-founder of Vana Care. His ventures tend to start the same way: a real problem appears inside a business, he builds the fix, then asks who else it could help.

An operator before an entrepreneur
The useful part of Jesse's story is not that every idea arrived fully formed. It is that most of them did not. They emerged from difficult days inside real operations: a participant who needed a better match, a care team losing hours to administration, a founder with a good product but no operating rhythm, or a community asset with capacity sitting idle.
Jesse has spoken publicly about a disrupted childhood, leaving school early, personal loss and becoming a young father. Those experiences did not hand him a neat founder blueprint. They built a bias towards action, resilience and learning by carrying responsibility.
Before Vana Care, he spent about a decade managing, overseeing and owning gyms. In 2018, while managing Anytime Fitness Adelaide, Jesse and a gym member helped save a 39-year-old man in cardiac arrest. Jesse retrieved and applied the gym's defibrillator within minutes. It is one moment in a longer career, but it captures the operating instinct clearly: see what is needed, move quickly and make the system work when it matters.

Jesse co-founded Vana Care with childhood friend Jason Layton in 2021. The idea began with a practical gap: disability support could do more to connect people through health, fitness, shared interests and the right human match.

Navigator in Reach was founded by Alicia after seeing people struggle with confusing plans and unused funding. equila helped build and invest in the systems and digital tools around that mission, including a free AI information assistant.

SHOWOFF started when Jesse and Gemma McMahon could not find a tanning oil that felt good or matched the product experience they wanted. Their answer was to make one, then build the systems and brand discipline needed to test it in the market.

Local employment
Hundreds of South Australian jobs over time
Businesses Jesse has helped build have employed hundreds of South Australians over time. A live aggregate review of Vana Care's payroll records on 2 September 2026 found more than 270 people had been employed since the company began in 2021.
This is a cumulative employment history, not a claim that all 270 people work there today. Vana Care publicly describes a current network of more than 100 support workers.

Jesse enjoys big visual ideas, calculated stunts and the mechanics of why some stories travel. His underwater proposal in the Maldives reached national television and newspapers. It was a personal moment, not a disguised business campaign, but it showed the same instinct for preparation, timing and an image people would remember.
In business, he applies that instinct more deliberately. The hook should reveal a useful product, a human result or a mission worth noticing. Community health
Twenty beds worth fighting for
McLaren Vale & Districts War Memorial Hospital has served its community since 1951. It is a community-owned incorporated association and registered charity, governed separately by a volunteer board. Jesse does not own it, and neither does equila.
Jesse serves as the hospital's operations manager through equila, working beside the board to strengthen the wider health precinct and pursue a safe reopening of its maintained 20-bed ward. At the time this profile was published, the ward remained closed.
The proposal reported by InDaily was practical: fund a 90 to 180-day pilot and test whether existing local capacity can help relieve pressure elsewhere in South Australia's health system. Reopening still depends on government engagement, funding, workforce, certification and clinical requirements. The passion is real, and so is the work required to turn it into a safe service.
